Brief Description:  Excavations along Wyalusing Creek identified a clearly defined single component occupation of Late Archaic/Lamoka affiliation designated the Bennett Site #1 (36Sq109).  The prehistoric assemblage includes 1,684 lithics, including bifacial, unifacial, and cobble tools, cores, debitage, and fire-cracked rock as well as 1,177 modern/historic artifacts and 22 pieces of faunal material.

The excavations and analytical results verified a mix of modern/historic and prehistoric material in the plowzone.  In contrast, the subplowzone context revealed the bases of ten partially intact pit (hearth) features containing debitage, fire-cracked rock, and charcoal. Several radiocarbon samples also were extracted which verified occupation and use of the site during the Late Archaic cultural period.  This conclusion was further supported by the quantity of small, narrow-bladed, stemmed or side-notched projectile points in the collection.

In addition, archaeobotanical and protein residue samples provided information concerning subsistence and seasonality of available flora and fauna including pine, oak, hickory nuts, acorns, wild turkey, and fish.  The results of this investigation have significantly contributed to our understanding of Pennsylvania prehistory by providing baseline data of prehistoric site(s) which are virtually undocumented in this subregion and drainage of northeastern Pennsylvania.
