 Annual Archaeological Essay Contest - October 2008

sponsored by The Pennsylvania Archaeological Council

 

"Why is it important to protect archaeological sites?"

Content: In the essay, the student should describe what an archaeological site is; what we can learn by investigating sites; why archaeological sites should be protected; and how students can help protect archaeological sites.

Length: The length should be 250 words or less.

Appearance:  Each essay must be neatly handwritten in ink, or, if the contest is used as a computer exercise, print-outs will be accepted.  At the top of the first page must be the following: students name, address, telephone number, and grade level, sponsoring teacher's name, and school's name, address, and telephone number.

Judging Criteria: Students will be judged on originality, understanding of archaeology theory, and creative approach to site protection.  Students will be judged in two age categories: 4th - 6th grade and 7th-9th grade.

Announcement of Winners: The top three winners and sponsoring teacher is the winners in each category, and those recognized by honorable mention citation will be notified by mail in April 2009. 

Awards to Winners: To be announced; past winners have received plaques, subscriptions to National Geographic and Archaeology Magazine, and books on archaeology.

Deadline for Sponsoring Teachers to Send Entries to Judging Committee: Entries must be postmarked on or before February 1, 2009.
