BRIEF DESCRIPTION:  These two sites are within the boundaries of a proposed gravel quarry.  In 1997, AARCON Associates surveyed the Elliott Mine property for the Glacial Gravel Company.  They identified several sites in the area including these two.  Both of the sites sit just above Slippery Rock Creek and just south of State Route 108.  Because the sites are located in an area to be quarried, the state Bureau for Historic Preservation contracted with an archaeological consultant, ASC Group, to investigate the sites.  This spring, the sites were tested.

Twenty features were found at Site 36 Bt 5 including one historic feature which included 3 coins from the 1700s.  Site 36 Bt 345 contained 3 buried paleosols (or buried ground surfaces).  The upper two surfaces contained prehistoric cultural remains.  While the material from the sites is still under analysis, this information will add to our understanding of prehistoric and historic cultures along Slippery Rock Creek.
