BRIEF DESCRIPTION:  Along State Route 30 (Lincoln Highway) near Little Traverse Creek, Berger archaeologists identified the remains of a short term prehistoric camp site (approximately 5,000-2,000 years old).  The presence of more than 50 previously recorded prehistoric sites within a two-mile radius suggested a high density of prehistoric settlement and use of this highly productive riverine environment during prehistory.

It was postulated that the development and growth of the local residential community, and construction of highways and bridges would have destroyed any remnants of Native American occupation, however, discovery of more than 200 lithic artifacts along the edge of the state highway and within the residential garden area refuted the postulate.  The results of this investigation lends credence to the concept that archaeological sites are everywhere; even in one’s own back yard.
